Life of Edward Benjamin Dearing

Born Feb. 9, 1873 (parents--Lydia & Edward Dearing) 7 miles south of Jacksonville, Ill. Edward was 7 months' old when arrived with family to Hamilton county, Nebraska by covered wagon to live on homestead in sod house. In 11806 he farmed with his father raising corn and sold it at a good price. He decided he wanted to go to college and take a business course and went to Crete and lIncoln for a time. His brother Will owned a store in Phillips, Nebraska and he bought 1/2 interest and worked in the store for awhile and then sold out to his brother. Edward's father retired at an early age and rent his farm and his parents lived in Grand Island, Nebraska. After selling his interest in the store to his brother Will, he went to Grand Island and worked in the largest store there. A banker friend, who took a great deal of interest in my father, told him of some good opportunities in western Nebraska. He and another young man left Grand Island and went to Mitchell, Nebraska where he bought an interest in a store there. He did not care about being so confined and learned he could file for a homestead in Goshen County 14 miles south of Torrington, Wyoming. He continued to work in the store while proving up on the homestead in Wyoming. He med Odessa Springer when he went to Mitchell and courted her for one year and they were married June 4, 1902. The two older daughters were born in Nebraska and Carma in Wyoming. He lived on the homestead until 1918 and was a very successful cattle rancher. He then moved to Torrington and he and two other men received a charter to open a national bank -- The Citizens Natinal Bank. He was President of the bank up until his death in 1962. It was not necessary for him to spend toomuch time in the bank, so he pruchased a 5,000 acre ranch 85 miles west of Torrington and he drove to various places buying cattle for this ranch. He had a foreman and his wife lifing on the ranch to care for the cattle etc. He was considered the most knowledgeable man in the state of Wyoming on cattle and during a Republican administration (he was a Democrat) someone back in Washington D. C., suggested he be appointed to inspect the Government loans they were making to cattle ranchers. He was very well known in the state of Wyoming and a friend of Governor Ross and other high ranking politicians. He had been asked to run for a political office many tmes, but he chose not to get involved. Two men from each state were chosen to be on the Advisory Board for the New York World's Fair and he was one chosen to represent the state of Wyoming. He had a personal telephone call from the President of the U. S. inviting him and his wife to the opening of the fair. He and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary June 4, 1952. It was well represent by many friends and family. Before they developed some health problems and were not too elderly, they spent their winters either in Florida or California, getting out of the cold winters in Wyoming. They both passed away in 1962; mother passing away three weeeks before father passed away. Carma Dearing
