PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE USING THE INDEX

This index comprises one alphabetical 1isting of all persons and families with biographies included in the microfiche publication, British and Irish biographies 1840-1940.   Personal names appear with titles, but without qualifications.

Family names appear with their geographical location, where known.  Researchers should not expect names to appear exactly as given in the original dictionaries. Due to the large amount of data involved the editors have been usable In many cases to differentiate between persons or families with the same name. Nor have they been able to attempt to verify whether persons or families with sim1lar but differently formulated or spelled names are the same. Researchers should consult all possible variants of the names of people in whom they are interested.

Please note also that Debrett’s Peerage lists all members of peers' families, including the collateral branches, under the  main title-holder's name. These family members have not been individually indexed, and their entries must be found under the name of the peer. Where a peer's title and family name are identical, some dictionaries alphabetize entries by rank and others by forename; some dictionaries list, the formal rank, i.e. 'Baron', 'Earl', etc. – others use the more general style of 'Lord'. Note also that spellings of 'Marquess' and ‘Marquis' have NOT been standardized. they are interested.

Each entry in the index IS followed by the serial number of the microfiche on which the biographical entry occurs, with the date of the relevant dictionary in brackets. The microfiche serial number IS made up of two parts. The first part relates to the relevant dictionary, the second to the edition of that dictionary. Because each volume of Debrett’s Peerage comprises several alphabetical sequences the Debrett’s entries, in addition to the serial number, include also the microfiche number prefixed by 'f.'; e.g. 14.100 f.27 (1940) indicates fiche number 27 of dictionary 14.100 (1940).

The serial number appears on the right hand side of the microfiche title strip. Microfiche should thus be stored numerically for easy access.
