East India Company

Many British subjects went to India or other "colonies" that were administered by the Honourable East India Company (H.E.I.C.). Records of baptism, marriage, burial, and probate have been gathered from ministers in the East (mostly India) for British subjects. They have been indexed by geographic area. India is divided in three presidencies-Bengal, Bombay, and Madras. The REGISTER listed below gives the call number of the gazetteer and has a general map showing the approximate boundaries. The REGISTER lists other countries also gathered as part of the HEIC records.

Many of those listed are British Army personnel, but many are civil servants and businessmen in India who chose to have their children baptized or their family members buried by a British minister. Most of the British in the Far East up to 1900 (and many later) are listed in these records.
