FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service Assignment

1.         Your ancestor, Anthony PALMER, was born to a British soldier serving in Milano, Italy. He does not appear in the British Chaplain’s returns or regimental registers. You have obtained the address of the Pastor of the Italian Church near the British Army base in Milano. Please translate the attached letter into Italian and turn in the letter in Italian with your homework assignment.

2.         Your English cousin lives near London and wants to visit a Family History Centre, but can only go on a Sunday. Is there a Family History Centre in London, and if more than one, is there one open on Sunday (if so, please give address and phone number)?

3.         In the Vital Records Index search, what countries can you choose?

4.         Search for Lucius Mann in the Pedigree Resource File. You will find more than one. Please record the submission ID number of the one that submitted 141 MANNs, almost all from Massachusetts.

5.         Thomas and Jane Cockshutt had ten children in Chorley, Lancashire between 1760 and 1790. Find at least one of the children in the IGI, then use a batch number search to find other possible children. Download them, import them into PAF, and print out a group sheet with the children in order (you should be able to find nine of them this way). Attach the group sheet.

6.         Johannes WESTFALL (AFN: 5FGX-MM) appears in the Ancestral File. How many submitters are listed for this individual—and how many are duplicates? Who is his first wife? Are there any discrepancies about who their children are? What would you do if you were descended from this couple? If you want to download starting with one of their children, is there any difference in the download depending on which mother is displayed when you start the download?

1.         In the announcements made on FamilySearch Internet on 17 May 2005, how many names are on each Pedigree Resource File CD? In that case, about how many names are on the Pedigree Resource File on the Internet?

2.         What are the different ways “Research Helps” on FamilySearch Internet can be sorted?

3.         My great-great grandmother, Charlotte Elizabeth MANN, died in 1927 in Derby(shire) England, an elderly widow. Her husband had died fifty years earlier. When starting our genealogy, we had no idea what her maiden name was. Find her in the 1881 census of England on FamilySearch and attach a print of the household from the 1881 census.

4.         What is her husband’s name? (hint: search for the birth of one of the children listed on the censusbut not Noel E.).

5.         Now do a parent search in the IGI for the British Isles using the husband and wife. How many entries appear in the IGI for British Isles (if less than 25, try leaving out the mothers maiden name).

6.         Try searching for Edward OBrien Mann in the IGI, but check the exact spelling box. Experiment with using just the middle initial, leaving a space or not leaving a space, and putting a period after an initial or no initial. Check the printout you made in #9 above. Now, how can you get his census record to come up while doing an exact spelling search (hint: spacing and periods matter)?

7.         Look for Edward OBrien Manns marriage. If you have trouble read the hint, but try it without the hint first. When and where was he married?

8.         Print a list of places in Rutland county (Rutlandshire), England for which the Family History Library has records.

9.         Browse the FamilySearch.org category Archives and Libraries for an English country of your choice. List below at least one library web site you found. List at least one web site listed there that doesnt appear to be a library or archive. What did you think of the experience?

10.      For a real challenge, try finding all the IGI entries for the Thomas SMITHERS and Sophie Charlotte EAST family (Click here for family group records received from new client).
