Please use the LTA Research form as you
complete the following assignment. For the related handout material, please see
Land Tax Assessments, A Census Substitute.
1. Robert Bell was christened in 1801 in the
parish of Aysgarth. His father is named as Matthew Bell. In the 1861 census
Robert said that he was born at Low Abbotside, Yorkshire. Find out if a Matthew
Bell is listed in the Low Abbotside Land Tax records in 1801. Hint: the Quarter
Session records for the different counties often contain copies of the Land Tax
from 1798-1832. Remember that most land tax records held on the national level
are for the year 1798! Low Abbotside is in the Wapentake of Hang West.
2. What film number did you use?
3. Who was the proprietor?
4. Are there any other people with the Bell
surname in Low Abbotside, if so what are their names?
