ASSIGNMENT

1. Trace the regiments in which John P. Bontein served as an officer.  He is listed as a cornet on his son's christening record in 1812.  When was he first listed as an officer and when does he cease appearing as an officer?

2. Michael Gorman of the 53rd regiment of foot left the service before 1850.  What film number contains his "soldiers' documents" and what do they tell us about him (when and where was he born, for example)?

3. John powell left his newlywed wife to join the 24th dragoons in feb. 1811. She never heard from again, nor did she ever receive a pension. Can you explain this? Use the same record that will answer the following questions--how tall was he, when and where was he born, and what was his former occupation?

4. A note i had overlooked in earlier research says that my ancestor, Robert Mann, was the cousin of Cornelius Mann, the father of the noted General Gother Mann.  Robert was born in about 1675.  What can you find out about Gother Mann and his family? (hint: try dictionary of national biography to point to military time period, then try an appropriate military book or source). About 30 minutes anticipated work (you don't need to compile a complete family history, pedigree, and descendancy chart).

5. One of my relatives married capt. Digby Mackworth after the war of 1812. What was that relative's name and what children did Capt. Mackworth have?
