Stuart Raymond Genealogical Bibliographies

        History 407R

The first edition of the series came out in 1988. The second edition was picked up by the Federation of FHS. English Genealogy (942 D23rb) brings together the titles of a group of books and articles about selected English subjects. They are intended to help you find your way around the numerous published guides to genealogy. Eleven county bibliographies have been published in the series so far. The national bibliography (Ref 942 D23rs) excludes local material and attempts to cover items that don't fit in any one of the county bibliographies.

The bibliographies are annotated (they have some narrative added to the bibliographic cite). The attached table of contents gives an idea of the subjects covered. A sample bibliography is also attached. There is an index at the end of each booklet.

A bibliography saves time and is helpful when learning about a county or subject in English genealogy. You should read pages 5-6, where he explains what he did in the bibliography and introduces its arrangement.

Let us look at Somerset county as an example of the series. There are several categories of records, including Libraries and Record Offices, Bibliography and Archives, Biographical Dictionaries and Occupational Sources, Family Histories, Parish Registers, and Probate Records. One fifth of the book is devoted to an alphabetical listing of published family histories. Note that the probate section is especially helpful for Somerset.

Many of the books listed in his bibliographies are in the FHL. Some are found in serials (like Somerset Record Society). His reference will be to a location in England. It’s up to you to find out if the FHL has it.

The following list of Stuart Raymond bibliographies is incomplete. After some time, he adopted other formats for titles, breaking some counties into separate titles rather than just calling them (County) – A genealogical bibliography,  he has Yorkshire family histories and pedigrees, Yorkshire lists of names, Yorkshire occupations : a genealogical guide, and Yorkshire parish registers, monumental inscriptions and wills. He has some that cover numerous counties, like Southwest Family Histories (942 D23rc). At least one is based on subject only (not locality), i.e., Occupational sources for Genealogists: A Bibliography. Rather than try to keep this list up to date, I ask you to check the FHLC to go with those listed below with FHL call # (also see his website at www.samjraymond.btinternet.co.uk/bglg.html):
